December 15 Greetings.Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone!
...in advance, obviously, because I won't be around in person to say it on the days themselves.
See you guys next year. =) December 12 I am afraid. What I'm afraid of is becoming desensitized to suffering, but the other extreme being being unable to draw the line between compassion and letting go, I am torn into two. I am afraid to learn of the suffering in the world because I know that once I am exposed to this, my outlook will never be the same again, and I will never be able to go back to a life of blissful ignorance. Selfish, I know, but why would I want to wring my own heart when I know that there is too much suffering in the world for any one person to alleviate?
I still get depressed when I see sick dogs, especially puppies, on the verge of a slow death, put in a cage with nothing but dirty water to drink. I don't understand how people can tolerate the suffering they see their pets endure, if they even treat them as pets. Is it so hard to get the puppies to a vet for medication if they're sick? Is it so hard to get them decent nutrition? If that is too hard, then why keep a pet in the first place?
Why can't you see that even animals feel pain like humans do? Don't you realize that they should be treated humanely? I am no animal rights advocate cum fanatic, but I do want to see animals free from cruelty. Even as I say this, I know that we can't possibly help every mistreated pet/stray in the world, but that is no excuse for not treating your own pet right. Why can't we all do our part?
I haven't even touched on the pain that humans themselves endure. About children with AIDS because of the folly of their parents, poverty-stricken countries who seem to have no way out of their dire straits, parents who see their children die of starvation right before their very eyes, wars robbing families of loved ones, the lack of education destroying any hope the younger generation had of development.
I haven't touched on orphans who have never known the love of a parent, who live forgotten in the shadows of society. Tell me how often you think of an orphan, anyway. I haven't touched on friends who aren't even well-off enough to buy new shoes every year, who live in the squatters, who drop out of school to work. Some don't even know when their next meal will be. These people don't worry about how badly their internet connection sucks or how much credit they have left in their handphones. Because they don't have these commodities anyway.
How can I go back to a life of blissful ignorance when all around me are people who need help? How can I spend money without any qualms when I know that people don't even have money to spare for food? How can I even smile while surrounded by the less fortunate? How do I enjoy life, knowing that I could take all I possessed and sell them to support other lives?
You tell me. December 10 Yet ANOTHER personality test. xDYour view on yourself: You are down-to-earth and people like you because you are so straightforward. You are an efficient problem solver because you will listen to both sides of an argument before making a decision that usually appeals to both parties. The type of girlfriend/boyfriend you are looking for: You like serious, smart and determined people. You don't judge a book by its cover, so good-looking people aren't necessarily your style. This makes you an attractive person in many people's eyes. Your readiness to commit to a relationship: You prefer to get to know a person very well before deciding whether you will commit to the relationship. The seriousness of your love: You are very serious about relationships and aren't interested in wasting time with people you don't really like. If you meet the right person, you will fall deeply and beautifully in love. Your views on education: Education is less important than the real world out there, away from the classroom. Deep inside you want to start working, earning money and living on your own. The right job for you: You're a practical person and will choose a secure job with a steady income. Knowing what you like to do is important. Find a regular job doing just that and you'll be set for life. How do you view success: Success in your career is not the most important thing in life. You are content with what you have and think that being with someone you love is more than spending all of your precious time just working. What are you most afraid of: You are concerned about your image and the way others see you. This means that you try very hard to be accepted by other people. It's time for you to believe in who you are, not what you wear. Who is your true self: You are mature, reasonable, honest and give good advice. People ask for your comments on all sorts of different issues. Sometimes you might find yourself in a dilemma when trapped with a problem, which your heart rather than your head needs to solve. Hmm, pretty accurate if I might say so myself. Wanna have a go at it? Click here. December 05 Tagged by ShereneRules & Regulations:

1.How do you know 1? WOW. Long story. See, she was a friend of Eddie, and Eddie couldn't stop raving about her once he REDISCOVERED her existence way back in...Form 4, and Eddie's enthusiasm was so contagious that somehow we began reading each other's blogs (or something), and finally we added each other, and we've been fast friends ever since. Right, Rach? *pokes Rach* It was all Eddie's fault, really. =P Remain young. =P Now that I've met him, I've aged considerably. Wanna know my true age? Eh, cannot tell lah, one of women's greatest secrets wor, the other being her weight. Or rather, mass. Oh, never mind. 3.What would you do if 3 and 4 dated you? At the same time? Tough one. I'd pick 3 on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and 4 can have the rest of the week. XD I'm very fair, see? (pun!) Um, well, it's a free country. If they like each other, I have no other comments. Except that uh...never mind. *smiles sweetly*
What is your PROBLEM? I've said over and over again that Esther Ling is the cutest human being to ever walk this earth. READ BETWEEN THE LINES! xD 6.Do you know anything about 8's family? LOL! Yeah. I know her sister, she's just about the quirkiest, clumsiest person I know, yet I can't help liking her. Her name's May - what a pretty name, right? xD I really shouldn't tell you this,but...well, he helped me to finish my Oreo Mcflurry just the other day. Don't spread the juicy gossip! =P 8.What language does 2 speak? Nonsense. LOL! The last I heard, it was some girl he refers to as The Princess. I mean, who calls their girlfriend THAT? That'd only serve to inflate her ego, whoever she is. He should have consulted me first. *Sigh*
10.How old is number 4? Not very old. =P 11. 5? As old as number 4. (refer to #10) No better question to ask hia? I mean, I could tell you all the top secret info and all you want to know is her AGE? Hopeless paparazzi. xD I know she likes Marie Digby, but as for FAVOURITE...hmm, perhaps herself? =P No idea, really. 13. 7 ? Um, any band that has a drummer in it, I presume. A REALLY good drummer. A REALLY good, Christian drummer. Right, Esther? 14.Is 8 single? The last time I checked, she was intent on living her life as an old maid, but that might change, so to all the hopefuls out there, ask her yourself. =P I can't believe this. Bong Sing Kock, I FORGOT YOUR LAST NAME!!! 16.Would you consider being in a relationship with 1? This is a non-question. I ALREADY am in a relationship with her. Grrr. She's one of my closest friends, okay? 17.Which school does 2 go to? He dropped out of school at 15 and became a construction worker by day and satay seller by night. Haha, no, seriously, he managed to bribe officials to let him into UTP and he's currently pursuing a gir- *cough* degree in Chemical Engineering there. I was joking about the bribing part. He actually blackmailed them. No lah, joking nia. =P Awarded scholarship wor. Smart kia.
18.What do you like about 3? I'm going to make a list, so bear with me... 1. Everything. (Gee, that was easier than I thought.) =P HAHAHA.For those of you who understand written and spoken Chinese. LOL.
KFC's WE DO CHICKEN RIGHT - Lost in Translation!
A middle school Teacher in China asked his students to translate KFC's commercial "WE DO CHICKEN RIGHT" 17. 我们愿意鸡好. And, of course, the most creative one is..........
December 02 The future beckonsDo I start off with an apology to my blog readers who have been post-deprived these few months? Not that anyone I know misses my entries - nobody bugs me to update anyway. =P I know I haven't been blogging substantially (and by "substantially" I mean intellectually) these few months; somehow the blogging bug wore off from the beginning of the year. I used to be able to blog for stretches at a go (think last year, people), but nowadays I lack neither the inspiration nor the motivation to actually discuss what's happening in my life. You see, it's always the same old story. If it isn't about academics, then it's about SPM pressure and vice versa.
But now that everything's over - at least for six months - a different kind of issue has popped up: the issue of what I'm going to do next. My parents have brought up this topic more than once, and the discussions never quite end on a happy note. More like a resigned note. It's funny how they don't really think I'm cut out to be a teacher, and this coming from two teachers. =P I know they mean well, and I know they don't want me to shortchange myself. My mum seems pretty keen on my becoming a DENTIST.
...
Dunnoe why lah, but I feel like there are more interesting (understatement!) things to do than stare at people's teeth day in day out for the rest of my working life.
Anyway, here's a conversation snippet to illustrate the point I am trying to make.
May : I quote my dad, who quoted from somewhere else : If you have the brains, follow your heart.
Jwern : What if you don't have the brains?
May : Then you follow your liver lor.
Jwern : XD Either way you still 'mengikut hati', right?
Sometimes I don't think I have the brains to be more ambitious. Even the thought of taking Physics as a major is daunting to me, and I'm seriously considering that. I doubt my ability to understand and grasp concepts that seemingly have no practical application in daily life. I doubt my ability to sit through Form Six, because if I'm seriously considering Physics, the best choice would be to go to Form Six and struggle through what would be the most informative year and a half of my entire school life. I don't like the thought of scoring a C for my Maths (the second most painful thing next to childbirth, and I haven't actually experienced childbirth yet), even if I shouldn't care less because the entry level requirements for local universities aren't all that high anyway.
My main motive is to become SO good in the subject I'm going to major in that my students benefit from me. It wouldn't do to have a Form Five level understanding of Physics to TEACH Form Five, because that's barely getting by. The higher you go, the more you comprehend. That's my personal motto when it comes to studying. Don't worry, May, if you don't understand now, you'll understand later when you see the bigger picture. So hold on for a few chapters more and hopefully, something will click. Works almost every time, provided I have enough time to digest the information. How I survived without tuition. =P
I wonder if the path I am thinking of choosing will lead to disillusionment, because I don't particularly love Physics as a subject. I love English, but there's no market value there. English teachers are so dispensable (no offense, mum). I could teach as well (or probably better) than a few I know even without any formal training. But no formal training in Physics, you're as good as half-dead. =P A good student can spot a not-so-good teacher a mile away. I like science and explaining concepts will be far more thrilling to me than correcting a student's grammar over and over again. Biology as a subject would probably be easier for me than Physics, but honestly speaking, Biology teachers seem to be about as useful as History teachers. Not very. At least not at a Form Five level. No offense to Biology/History majors out there. *buckles seatbelt, puts on helmet and closes eyes tightly*
Can I just state my views without apologizing every half sentence? =P
I guess I'll just apply for that scholarship and see how He leads. If I get it, then that's settled. If I don't, Form Six. After all, He led my brother through Form Six and blessed him abundantly - let's wait and see what surprises He has in store for me. I may not be a future MD like Ray, but that's not what I want anyway. xD
So you get what I mean about ending on a resigned note? =P |
